Overview

*Sabarimala* is one of the most significant Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, located in the Periyar Tiger Reserve in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. It is dedicated to *Lord Ayyappa*, a deity revered as the epitome of celibacy, dharma (righteousness), and self-control.

### *Key Highlights*

1. *Geographical Location*:
   - Sabarimala is nestled in the dense forests of the Western Ghats at an altitude of 4,133 feet.
   - The temple is surrounded by 18 hills, and the journey to the temple involves trekking through rugged terrain, symbolizing spiritual perseverance.

2. *Spiritual Significance*:
   - Sabarimala is unique as it promotes inclusivity and equality, welcoming devotees irrespective of caste, creed, or religion.
   - The temple emphasizes self-discipline, austerity, and devotion, which pilgrims observe during the 41-day *vratham* (penance).

3. *Rituals and Practices*:
   - Devotees wear black, blue, or saffron clothing and avoid luxury, symbolizing detachment from worldly pleasures.
   - Pilgrims carry an *Irumudi Kettu* (a sacred offering bundle) on their journey.

4. *Makara Jyothi Festival*:
   - The temple’s peak season is during the *Mandala-Makaravilakku period* (November to January).
   - The sighting of the *Makara Jyothi* (a celestial light) on the day of Makar Sankranti is the most significant event, attracting millions of devotees annually.

5. *Restrictions and Controversy*:
   - The temple traditionally restricts the entry of women of menstruating age (10-50 years), a practice linked to Lord Ayyappa's identity as a celibate deity.
   - This has been the subject of significant legal and social debate in recent years, following a 2018 Supreme Court ruling allowing entry for all women.

6. *Environmental and Cultural Importance*:
   - Located within a biodiversity-rich area, the pilgrimage also stresses the importance of conserving nature.
   - The journey is considered a purification process, reflecting the harmony between nature and spirituality.

Sabarimala is not only a religious destination but also a cultural and spiritual experience, symbolizing faith, unity, and perseverance.
